The Russian convoys were extremely dangerous with attacks by submarines and also the Luftwaffe that was able to reach the convoys from the Norwegian bases. Here I have a four funnel destroyer that the Royal navy received from the USA. They were WW1 vintage and not meant for the open Atlantic. A dear friend of the family served on this ship as a young lad and thankfully survived the horrors of war at its most brutal.
